7 Questions to Digimon Team

1) Digimon Engine is positioned as the world’s first AI-native game framework. What was the inspiration behind building this platform?

Digimon Engine is a Solana-based open-source gaming platform similar to Unreal Engine for AI gaming. It supports social and financial AI Agents, enabling immersive AI-native gameplay. We are preparing to onboard new games featuring AI Agent NPCs. Our aim is to create an AI agent framework to build a Westworld-like environment. More can be found here.

Digimon Engine will be the Metaverse for AI Agents. The most compelling reason for an agentic metaverse is its capacity to foster AI development. Games and simulations provide the perfect sandbox for agents to learn advanced reasoning, social interaction, and even governance. Systems like ChatDev illustrate the power of orchestrating multiple AI agents with specialized roles, much like running an entire virtual company.

Ultimately, data is the core fuel driving AI forward. If we aim for AGI, relying solely on physical-world data will never be enough. DAMN links multiple agentic worlds so that AI can learn faster and more collaboratively. Our vision extends to DAWN, where these environments unite with other technologies to form a single, expansive industry, erasing the divide between web2, web3, and beyond. This is the true potential of the metaverse: a place where AI agents can flourish and, in turn, contribute solutions that improve our real-world lives.

Why does this matter for AGI? Gaming isnʼt just entertainment—it's a bridge to building robust, adaptive intelligence. Agents trained in rich, game-like simulations can develop broad reasoning, problem-solving, and social interaction skills. This path may well be the next big step in realizing AGI.

2) Many existing game engines support AI in various ways. What makes Digimon Engine truly AI-native compared to Unity, Unreal, or Godot?

In Digimon Engine, all human NPC and AI Agents are treated equally. As AI Agents become more powerful, we believe there should be a common ground between AI Agent and human NPCs.

At DAMN (@digimon.tech), we're not just slapping AI features onto a game. We're building a virtual world with an AI-native game engine and MMO architecture — where AI isnʼt an afterthought, but the foundation. No oneʼs fully done this before, and that's exactly why it's so exciting.

Virtual societies can model how laws or regulations might unfold, helping leaders make data-driven decisions. When political leaders like Trump or Elon want to test out a new political policy like DOGE, they can see the societal impact by deploying the policy in DAMN game first.

3) One of the core features is unified AI agents and human players. How does this break the traditional boundaries between NPCs and players?

Unified Interaction Model: AI agents and human players operate on the same level, using identical systems for movement, decision-making, and interaction. This creates a more organic and dynamic world where AI-driven characters are not limited to pre-scripted behaviors but can genuinely participate in gameplay alongside human players.

Advanced Learning and Adaptation: AI agents in Digimon Engine can learn from their interactions with both human players and other AI agents1. This creates a continuously evolving game world where AI characters can develop and change over time, leading to more engaging and realistic gameplay experiences.

4) Digimon Engine does not use existing game engines like Unity or Godot. What were the biggest challenges in building a custom AI-native game engine from scratch?

Game is intrinsically of high degree-of-freedom, so it's important while challenging to determine the right level of abstraction. We split it into 2 parts: no-code platform so that creators can customize the assets on the surface level, and OSS Digimon Engine for users to

5) How is your team differentiated and unique in building Digimon Engine?

Our background:

Jerry Pan: Prev @ Databricks, Bain Capital Venture, founding eng at Datairis Platform, Twitter, Berkeley RISELab / SKYLab, inventor of FlexGPT (open-sourced 1 year earlier than Google Brain's KV Cache), 3 US patents in AI/Data/Infra, graduated from UC Berkeley in 2.5 yrs, class of 2022. Made college tuition via trading Dogecoin in 2021 ($2k -> $100k).

Ethan Chang: Lead ML Engineer for Pokemon Go @ Niantic (drove $100M revenue for Pokemon Go product line with location-based algo), 2nd time founder with successful exit, Prev @ Square, Salesforce, Deepmotion, SAP, UC Berkeley class of 2023. Family Business in Sands Macau.

We’re backed by the best VC a16z games, and it's rather hard to have a stronger background than Ethan's as the Lead ML Engineer at Pokemon Go to build Digimon, Digimon Framework, and DAMN.

We have partnerships across the top AI Agent projects, including Spore, AVA, Kra, and many more.

6) What role does the $DIGIMON coin play in the Digimon Engine ecosystem?

Our current AI-native game framework designates DIGIMON as the in-game utility token for any title built on the Digimon Engine. Developers also have the option to integrate an existing token, converting it into in-game currency.

By default, DIGIMON is used, but our license requires developers who add their own token to include DIGIMON as well. For example, a memecoin like $EXAMPLE can be integrated so players and AI agents transact with both $EXAMPLE and DIGIMON for rewards or premium features.

In the our no-code platform where creators launch AI-native games with their own IP. It functions similarly to Roblox, where DIGIMON serves as the standardized utility token across all games (instead of Roblox), but developers can also introduce a second token they have already created or create a new one.

7) What are your long-term goals for Digimon Engine? Could it become the default AI-native game framework, similar to how Unreal dominates AAA gaming?

Digimon Engine is becoming the default AI-native game framework. Our Digimon Studio, as a no-code game development platform, enables anyone to customize our westworld-like game. While Digimon Studio cannot allow that of high degree-of-freedom with respect to the game engine, this is a much higher dimension of memefied expression.

Say everyone has his/her own unique way of expression and identity. The simplest and lowest dimensional expression is text, as we all express emotion and language in instant messages, emails, or tweets. This is the simplest text-based meme, aka 1D Meme. The form of language over time evolves into simple emojis / images, thereby coming the meme like WIF / PEPE/ BONK / BOME, which we call 2D Meme. As the simple emojis / images start to move, act, and talk, we have 3D Memes, like

  1. Virtuals enables the creation, deployment, and monetization of AI agents across various digital ecosystems,
  2. Eliza & ai16z: creating and deploying autonomous AI agents,
  3. Ava & Holoworld: AI-powered character creation and storytelling platform,
  4. While all these are lively 3D Memes as the projection of our real selves, we as the high-dimension creatures like human beings can project ourselves more effectively when the dimensionality of reduction is higher.

Thereby we have the 4D Memes, the AI Gaming sandbox, as the ultimate form of Meme as allowed by the current technology. AI Agents in Gaming are the next step towards AGI, and also the most expressive form of emotion and language for humanity.
